Chapter thirty-four

Walking away from Rylann is a hard feat when all I want to do is pull her close and kiss her.

Even though it’s the right thing to do. She needs more time to process. I meant what I said. Everything that happened and will happen between us means something. What we share is too significant for it to be meaningless.

Squeezing her leg was only meant to be a playful gesture, but as soon as my hand made contact with her silky skin, I felt the electricity roar to life. She’s kidding herself if she thinks there was nothing there. The way her breath hitched and her thighs trembled tells me otherwise. She felt the energy shift between us.

We’ll never be nothing.

The connection we shared all those years ago runs too deep; it’s impossible to be forgotten or erased. She’s just in denial. Fighting the truth of how good we were together. The passion we shared.

She’s purposefully forgetting all the wonderful parts about us. Her fear has her focusing on the wrong things, but I’m going to enjoy making her remember. However, I need to tread carefully with her. She needs a little time to let my words sink in because I plan on getting to know her and spending time with her again.

This must all feel like an emotional overload to her. She’s been through a lot this past year. But I’m here for her now. She doesn’t have to do this alone. I’m going to prove it, little by little.

Rhys’s question about her nickname cracked open the door for me to tell her how she made me feel then and still does now. I want Rhys to know that I care about his mom and that we have a past connection. He is Rylann’s entire world. I know she isn’t the only one I have to win over this time around.

Since being here, I’ve learned two things.

One, I still fucking love Rylann. I never stopped, and I want her back. I don’t want to miss another minute of life without her. Two, the same goes for Rhys. I can’t get enough of that kid. He’s easy to love, and I want to be the one that loves him.

I snag a spot next to Levi and his father, Bob, waiting in line to buy tickets for the train tour around the farm. A glance over my shoulder reveals Rylann joining Scarlett and the kids as they wait off to the side.

“How was the drive?”

“It was good. Rhys kept me entertained. That kid is something else.”

“He is. He’s my little dude.” Levi sighs. “I was so worried about him after Sam passed. It’s why I helped Ry’s parents convince her to move in next door. We all thought he would need more support. We were wrong, of course. That kid is special. He’s been the one supporting us. Especially his mom. He—”

Levi cuts himself off, making me curious, and Bob excuses himself so we can talk more privately.
